When is the wildlife sanctuary accessible?
The refuge faunique Marguerite-D'Youville is open 365 days/year, from sunrise to sunset. The Pavillon de l'île (Café de l’île), entrance door of the wildlife sanctuary, opens at 9 a.m. all year long. Closing time varies according to the season.
Is there any entry fee?
Yes. To provide for the maintenance of the site and its equipments, an entry fee is required to access to the wildlife sanctuary's trails: Pricing.
Entry fees are applicable during Café de l'île's business hours. Outside these hours, there is no entry fee. The refuge faunique Marguerite-D'Youville is accessible from sunrise to sunset.

Parking is free on île Saint-Bernard.
What can you do at the wildlife sanctuary?

Hiking and nature observation are the most recognized and popular activities. Picnic areas, docks and observation points are available for visitors.

A fun activity to do as a family is a digital rally. The application is free and available on Android (Google Play) or Apple (App Store). Also, to discover the site in an enriching and interesting way, you can download our audioguide (french only).

During the week-ends, the adventure trail and the pirate ship are famous!

Can I bring my pet on the island?
No house pets are allowed on the island. This includes the parking, the trails and the "tertre".
Can I ride my bike in the trails?
Bikes are not allowed on the île Saint-Bernard, including Fatbikes. Les vélos sont interdits sur l’île Saint-Bernard, incluant les Fatbikes. Although cyclists are definitely welcome for a picnic or a break, we ask, for security measures, that they get off their bike before they enter on the island.
Is it possible to picnic on the island?
Yes, it is possible to picnic everywhere on the island. Many areas and tables are provided for this purpose. To complete your lunch, you can grab a snack or a beverage at the Café de l’île.
Are the trails uneven or they're easily walkable for seniors and young families?
The refuge faunique Marguerite-D'Youville's trails are flat and easily accessible for all kind of hikers. However, trails are not adapted for wheel chairs nor umbrella-type strollers.
Can I swim on the island?
It strictly prohibited to swim from the island's shores.
Can I see animals in the wildlife sanctuary?
A lot of animals can be seen in the wildlife sanctuary as well as numerous birds, which attract many ornithologists. Chances are high that you might spot an animal, which makes it a unique trip everytime. Our observation checklist (french only) is a way to keep track of the species observed to this day in the wildlife sanctuary.
What winter sports can I do in the wildlife sanctuary?
Winter walking and snowshoeing are the two winter sports you can do in the wildlife sanctuary. You can also do cross-country skiing if you follow the marked trails, but for a better experience, you can go to the centre écologique Fernand-Seguin as the trails are all traced! There is no entry fee and you can enjoy 20km of traced trails!

At the wildlife sanctuary, there is a rental centre where you can rent seasonal equipment at low prices.

It is strictly prohibited by municipal law to bring a house pet in the trails of the centre écologique Fernand-Seguin. The dog park is closed since 2016, due to the construction of the new LEED lodge. The Ville de Châteauguay is planning on opening a new dog park soon on its territory. What winter sports can I do at the ecological centre.

When weather allows it, multiple trails are traced for cross-country skiing, totalling around 20 km. There is a trail reserved for snowshoeing and another one for winter walking. Children definitely love the sliding hill and some "crazy carpets" are available.

Cross-country skiing sessions are offered for people who wants to learn or just improve their technique.
